The Devil’s Stair: The Kessling Case
In 1978 Ohio, a teenage girl’s possession case ends with her stepfather dead at the foot of the same cellar stairs where his first wife died, and one phrase nobody can explain.
Winter 1977, outside Kessling, Ohio. Fifteen-year-old Lisa Ostendorf begins speaking at night in a voice that isn’t hers. Her devout mother asks the Church for an exorcism. The diocese declines, sends a young priest to observe, and a psychic researcher and a local TV crew follow. Five weeks later her stepfather Wayne lies dead at the bottom of the cellar stairs, the same stairs where his first wife died in 1969, with the door bolted from the kitchen side. Told through police files, a priest’s notebook, cassette tapes and present-day interviews, the film builds a strong ordinary explanation and gives the skeptics full weight, but leaves one phrase unexplained: “the step that sings.”
